Joyce Bolden was born in 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. This mother of three was not always aware of her artistic talent until an incident that occurred 30 years ago. As a result of this tragic occurrence, she was in an extremely precarious and fragile physical state. To distract herself from her pain, Joyce sought refuge in art. It first began with small doodles on paper. It wasn’t until her children saw her sketching, that she began to expand on her God given artistic talents. Out of her pai n sprung beautiful Picasso, Monet, and Rembrandt inspired images. With her use of ink and colored pencils, she was able to erase the agonizing pain and discomfort she felt on a daily basis and create images that inspire and generate feeling of happiness and joy. For Joyce it is very important that people discuss the reasons for a person’s creative expression. Through the grace of God and encouragement from her children, she was able to find her “power in the midst of pain”. In the near future, Joyce will have an exhibit titled “From My Pain to My Pen”. She hopes that her work will begin a dialogue around the beauty, the ritual and the joy of creative expression..
